I am grateful for friends who are interested in my new hobby! Thank you! A dear friend I have known since my first year at Baylor asked me to create something. I asked her for still life ideas and she sent a photo of her table with books, a plant (and a painting by her husband (and source of inspiration) in the background. No pressure there! I had not tried painting books and had almost given up on plants, but thought it’s worth another try. Painting is play for me and it’s always worth trying to play with new ideas and opportunities.
Working on the painting, in process above, gave me the opportunity to step into one of my favorite studio rituals: How can I playfully create in a sustainable way? Well, I hate washing out paint that I can still use, so after working on the leaves in the plant, I had to do something with the leftover green paint!

There you have it. I love it as much as the larger painting. I’ll likely frame it and give it to her as well. I certainly don’t need any more of these sitting around my house!
My hope is to make sense of this in other parts of my life. I am still learning to shift my mindset from how can I produce more with the spare moments and margins I find throughout my day and instead, how can I play more with these gifts of time? I don’t have to use every minute just as I don’t have to use every drop of paint. And yet, might they both be opportunities to be present, mindful and aware, and see what creative gifts emerge.
I hope you enjoy the paintings. Let me know if you want something for a blank space on your desk or wall.
